Hello.

My fuel filter doesn't seem to be getting any petrol into it.
And my bike will only OCCASIONALLY start up, and when it does, shortly after, it dies.

Any idea why fuel isn't getting into the filter anyone?
And how to get fuel into there.

I believe it could be to do with no fuel being in there in the first place so the vaccum is really only pulling air through and the odd bit of fuel, hence the occaisonal starts...

All ideas appreciated

It is a low pressure fuel system that only works when the engine is runninning but when you engage the starter or use the kick start it should pull fuel through the system (and fill the filter).

There are 3 reasons I can think of for this.

1) Blockage in your filter or fuel pipes.
2) Vacuum valve on the tank is knackered.
3) No compression on your engine.

And would there be anything I could do to check and rectify the situation?

Well, judging by what Bis said, try the following:

1) Blockage in your filter or fuel pipes.

- Make sure no kinks in fuel line, check/replace fuel filter.
You could also pull the line off the tank and make sure it will drain from tank (make sure you got bucket handy to catch fuel, this will insure there is no ''trash'' in the tank blocking the fuel outlet.

2) Vacuum valve on the tank is knackered.

Try running it with the fuel cap off, if that works then the vacuum valve might be messed up.

3) No compression on your engine.

Thats gonna be a hard one to diagnose without a compression gauge, but I'd try # 1 and 2 first

err, Take it your from Europe, alot of words for same part. Over here in US we call it a Fuel Cap, Gas Cap, etc...

Not sure what you call it over there, Petrol Cap? Where you put fuel (petrol) into the tank

Ohh yeah, I gotcha, right well I'll try that now...
I took the fuel line off the tank and nothing poured out, when I used the kickstart some petrol trickled out...
Should it be pouring out? Or is that right?

Ok, running it without the fuel cap shwoed some signs of starting but then it just died out again.
But to be honest I think the starting up was due to me trying at it for longer.
When I took the fuel line off the tank, it would trickle a little when I kickstarted it (Or tried to).
As for the compression thing, I have no idea what that is.
But from the above, would anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to sort it?

You need to remove the fuel tube from the carb and let it dangle, Then crank the electric starter for a few seconds. You should get fuel flowing from the dangling fuel line while you crank the engine and flow should stop when you stop cranking the engine..

If you try the above and it works, then you might have a stuck float valve inside the carburetor. Try opening the drain screw on the bottom of the carb. What little fuel is in the float bowl will come out of the little tube next to the drain screw, and then tighten the drain screw. Then tap on the bottom of the carb a few times with something blunt like the handle of a screwdriver to free up the floats. Hit it firmly. Then, try to start it. It will take a bit of cranking to re-fill the float bowl with fuel. Don't burn out your starter.

If it still doesn't start up, then you will have to remove and disassemble/clean out the carb jets.

Okkk, I did all that, when I let it dangle, petrol dripped out, so I took the carb out, undid the screw waited till it had all poured out. Hit it hard with the butt of a screw driver, re-attatched it all, tried the electric start about 10 times, nothing, tried kickstarting it plenty of times, nothing.
I just don't know what's going on here. Any further Ideas anyone?

Pull the carb and take it apart and clean it. Clean every orifice.

Have you checked the condition of the spark plug?

Well I took the carb out earlier and used a can of air to clean every single hole, jet, valve ect that I could find, I unscrwed it and cleaned it all..
What more can I do?
And it's been checked like the other day, it's brand new, we've only just replaced it, I swear this ped is crap.
Any further ideas?

Dont use a can of air to clean your carb. Use a spray can of carb cleaner.
Air wont disolve deposits that block small openings. It will dislodge some of them, but the carb cleaner does a better job.

Also be sure to remove the jets & float from the carb body. The jets have tiny holes in that that can clog easily.

Be sure to take each jet in hand & block one end with your finger. Insert the straw (from the spray can) into the other end & give a good shot of cleaner. That will open up clogged holes. Make sure you see cleaner spurting out of the tiny holes in the sides of the jet.
