When I changed my oil for the first time I put the old stuff into a jug and aprox 670ml came out (my manual says 700ml which is about right) so when I filled it up I put around the same back in.
When I checked the level with the dip stick I had to screw it in to get a reading which was most of the flat bit. |
So if you had rested it on the threads, it would have been 1/2 way up the flat bit? That's where I thought it should be._________________

When I change mine, I been goin by the GY6 750ml stamped on the motor. I put the .25 in another container (save it for my 'freebie' every 3rd change) and it always reads perfectly to the top of the flat bit without ever burnning off or leaking down any. Based on that, I'm thinking I'm doin it right ...

If you haven't blown up then you're doing it right! I actually don't think it's that critical. I've known bikes carry on running with next to no oil in them, and others with too much, which carried on running after blowing the excess out of the breather!_________________

Just changed my oil for Maxima 15/50 fully synth at £8.95 a litre. The guys on singapore forums recon that they don't have to change till 2-3000km and the engine runs smoother.
ps. My sump nut was 17mm

Every cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, helicopter,s motorcycles that I've ever owned, ride driven or flown, the manual saids to unscrew or remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert until it stops with out screwing it in, pull out and check oil level. Every mechanic, technician, friends, foes I've ever come across until now and my dad agrees with this procedure. Sorry GP, but your mechanic is out voted in this one.
