Hi, broke down this morning on the way to work , I warmed the bike for a couple of mins as normal and then set of for my 6 mile journey to work after a couple of miles I lost drive as though the clutch was slipping but I still had max revs , I stopped to check what the problem could be and I noticed oil coming out of the belt/clutch case cover , at first I thought it was gear oil but it was engine oil , I eventually got to work after pushing but I still had power down hill but decided to push as I was losing oil . I took the belt cover off and it looks like the oil was coming in from either back of clutch or rollers as there is no oil near the top end of engine ie head gasket , everywere is dry apart from inside the belt area and the belt is full of oil . I have now got the bike home and I am trying to contact marshys were I purchased the bike , been trying fot 2 hours but no luck .the bike is only 2 months old and as 1000km on clock with proper run in proceedure , good oil and regular changes and a new plug . Can anyone help as what the problem could be as it still is under warranty but it is 200 miles away from were I bought the bike . Any help would be apreciated . Thanks

oh no! sounds like the seal has gone on the crankshaft! if it is, it's an engine rebuild, it's going to be about £20 for gaskets and new seals. free labour if you do it. don't get worried yet, get the bike home and take the variator off the crankshaft, then inspect the seal round the crankshaft where it goes through the crankcase. I can't imagine how the seal could go so quick! maybe there was a bit of dirt in the seal when the made the engine? ah if you can get hold of them and it's under warranty, they should be able to rebuild it for you. just have a look and try not to touch it. my seal leaked after my first rebuild becuase I didnt replace it, I managed to ride it for a month or so until I had to rebuild it again.

can you take the variator off? if so have a look and see if it's leaking. if it is and you like bodging stuff, get some silicone(mastik as it's known in the building trade) and smear it round the seal, let it dry and see if it holds. before bodging of course, ring up some local bike shops and see what they say.

I have just had another look at the seal , it looks like a plastic bearing . Should this be pushed in as it was sticking out a touch I have now carefully pushed it home . Hope this makes sense .

The seal should be pushed in as you say, Normally. they are pressed in rather tight and are difficult to remove without damage to them. It would seem that the seal was not set firmly in place when the engine was built. Removing the variator to change rollers should not have disturbed the seal.

I have just ordered a new crank seal and I have been told that I can fit it over the exsisting one . As anyone had any experience in doing this job that could help . I have been in touch with the dealer and because I have not had it serviced with a recognised dealer the warranty is no good . I serviced it myself . In the worst case senario does anyone know were I can get a engine for the bike in the uk . Thanks

It is a bit hard to say what was the root cause of the problem. The simple answer would be that the seal was not pressed in all the way and worked lose. In that case, pressing it back in tight may solve the oil leak problem. You will still need to clean up the oil mess. The oil in the clutch will cause it to slip and would at least require a through cleaning and may need to clutch pads replaced. The belt may be questionable as well as the oil may reduce the overall strength and longevity of the belt.

As a worst cast possibility, the crank bearing on the variator side may have failed causing the crank to vibrate back and forth and cause the seal to work lose. However, if that were the case, I think you would have heard some strange noise from the engine. Right now, you did not mention anything to make me suspect that this is the case. However, the possibility is reason enough to ask for an engine replacement.

You really need to keep on with your attempts to contact the dealer. I would press them for a total new engine and see what the response is to that. I'm sure they could ship you one and an engine swap is not very difficult. I'm sure we could walk you through that if you are unsure of what needs to be done.

If they don't like the new engine idea, then press for new clutch, new belt and new seal at the very least. Those would be easy replacements for you.

A bit of bad luck for you. Crying or Very sad The best thing to do is just move forward with a fix and get it all behind you.

Yes, it will be noisy if you start the engine, or try to start the engine with the side cover off.

say know more mr marsh as a habit of disappearing when needed.

I have already mentioned what problems I went through with marshys in the reccomendeds section.

it would seem we need to spread the word further so people dont fall fowl to this unscrupless dealer.

I'm glad I got my money back from them now but it took a few threats and a little word in is ear. to get it

How did you get them to answer the phone? Did you block your number? or use an outta town payphone? Perhaps a new-hire didn't know which phone #s or area codes to let ring-out???
It sounds like a lame question to some I'm sure, but this is unfortunatly the norm for some of these dealers that wish to renig the warranty at all cost and treat their bike sales as an "as-is/where-is/how-is/ and even why-is!" purchase Evil or Very Mad
