Here's a link that shows how to patch a tire on the inside.

Personally I wouldn’t recommend repairing a tyre on a scooter or motorbike, its fine on a car as you have 4 wheels to work with and if one blows its not the end of the world.

Have a blow out on a bike and the s**t really hits the fan

Why would you think a patch would fail? If patching a tire was dangerous, then it would be illegal for shops to do.

I worked at a tire shop for a few months during summer vacation in high school, and I personally patched at least a couple hundred tires and not once did someone return with a problem.

If you do it correctly, a patch will last as long as the tire.

I know it’s a legal practice and like you say most patches will never fail, but myself I would rather spend £30 and get a new one just to be on the safe side.

Perhaps has something to do with being on the back of a R1 when the tyre went at over 80mph not a very nice experience felt like the biggest tank slap in the world

Actually, the link in fox's post shows the best way to repair a puncture. An inside repair of a tire is the only repair recommended by most "good" tire manufacturers, and only on the tread part not on the sidewall.
They dont like or recommend plugging a tire, but a lot of people do it.
It's a good idea to have a plug kit if you have those cheap Chinese tires, you'll probably need it to get home to do a proper inside repair.

I carry a tire plug kit with me as well as fix-a-flat.

Came in handy recently. Had a screw in my tire and it went flat whilst on the road. I plugged the tire then used the fix-a-flat to inflate the tire enough to get me to the nearest air pump. Sure saved a butt load of scooter pushing!
