|
|
Hello, I have a lifan t5s scooter.
The problem I have is that when I get it to finally start it will run and rev up just fine but die in about 30 seconds or less.
Ive pulled the carb off and cleaned it up with carb cleaner, changed the spark plug, cleaned the air filter. Tried running it with out the air filter. But it still only starts up then dies after about 30 seconds then it has to site a while before it starts back up again.
I pulled the gas tank off today and cleaned it out good there was some rust in it. I put it all back together to try again and noticed a wire had came loose from what I beleive is the starter solenoid, it has a big red wire going to one side then the other side has about 2 inch red wire off the other side and I cant figure out wher it goes now. I think it should be a ground but I dont see why the wire is red.
any help will be much appreciated! |

I cleaned the fuel filter when I pulled the tank off. Dropped it in a glass filled with carb cleaner and shook it around, got a bunch of little nasty particles. Put it back on the little thing it sits on and could blow through it.
So I dont think its clogged. |

Check the vacuum operated petcock too, and check the vacuum line from the manifold to the petcock is attached with no leaks. _________________

| is the pet c**k whats attached to the bottom of the fuel tank with 2 lines coming out of it? 1 goes to the manifold the other goes to the carb. If so I could blow through that but not suck through the feed line to the carb. |

The petcock is a vacuum controlled valve. It is normally closed until the engine is running and provides vacuum that opene the valve. So, if you draw a vacuum on the line that goes to the intake manifold, that should open the valve and you will be able to see how much fuel flows out of the fuel line. If the flow looks low, then look for a block in the fuel feed line.

yup when I suck on the hose going to the intake the hose to the carb flows plenty of fuel.
I'm gonna try one of the cr7hs plugs tonight when I get off work, I have a autolite plug in there now. |

OK, plenty of fuel getting to the carb. Check that possibility off.
A new spark plug is always a good idea when you are having a little trouble with any engine. They are too cheep to go chasing around after problems for days only to find out it was a bad plug.
I know you cleaned the carb, but did you remove the jets for cleaning? It sounds like the idle circuit is plugged to me. Also, do you have the idle mix screw about 2 1/2 turns out from full in?

No I didn't take the carb down that far, I will tommorrow cause my carb kit will be in so I can do a proper rebuild on that.
Yes I turned the idle mix screw all the way in and back out about 2 1/2 turns. |

Well no luck still with the new spark plug, I cant even get it fire right now, It almost did but the just died.
Just to be sure I pulled the plug and put the plug wire on it and held it, it is getting good spark.
I'm gonna have to say it must be lacking air, or compression? |

A carb kit? I think those are hard to find. Give us a link where you found it. That may be useful for others.
Personally, though, I have not seen many carbs that needed a kit, but it can't hurt, maybe. Please pay attention to the main jet size if one is included in the kit. The jets should have a number stamped on them but in case they don't, make a visual comparison on the size between them just for reference, and just in case.
Did you get the wiring figured out for the starter solenoid?
When you start a cold scoot, the enrichment circuit is open for 30 - 60 seconds and then closes. The engine will idle rather fast while that circuit is open but the idle drops as soon as the auto choke closes. The idle may be set so low that the idle circuit alone cannot keep the engine running. Try to set the idle speed higher and see if it will stay running.

Don't give up on the carb yet. It could still be some dirt in there. I thought from your first post that the idle circuit had some dirt in it.
Go up to the top of the page and click on profile, add your location. It's really nice to know where people are from.

No I haven't messed with the starter solenoid since I can't use the starter, Ive just been trying to kick start it.
Well the time I did get it to almost fire up I was holding the throttle about half way, Then kinda backed off when it was about to smooth out I thought.
I have't had any luck just kick starting with no throttle.
Well I'm not entirely sure about the carb kit, Its for a 3.5 hp honda engine, and since thats what mine is. I think it should work.
I work at oreilly auto parts and we have a book with small engine parts, Prime line is the company.
If its the right one, Ill be sure to post a part number. |

What's up with the starter? Or, is it the battery?

a while back when I tried to get it started the start motor got stuck on, So I just unplugged it.
I was going to hook it back up last night since I grabbed a car battery to use while I try to get it running, But I cant seem to find the plug . Since the relay has a wire coming off I dont know where it goes, I havent messed with it.
Well I went ahead and stripped the carb down completly, man these are simple compared to a car one.
Got a quite a bit more gunk from the bowl, and a few other passages, I sprayed through every passage on the carb it self also. I'm gonna let the jets soak tonight and check my kit tommorrow, and put it back together and go from there. |
