Big thanks to Billy Green for this!! :icon_thumbs_up:

Setting the valve clearances are quite straight forward, the valves should be set when the engine is cold, and when the engine is at TDC (Top Dead Centre). TDC can be set by turning the fly wheel until the timing marks line up. I.e. the 'T' is aligned with the pointer on the engine case.

Then remove the cylinder head cover and ensure the camshaft timing marks are ligned up with the edge of the engine casing (red arrows), with the large hole in the cog away from the engine(yellow arrow)

With the timing now set, and the head cover removed you will have access to the tappets (used to adjust the clearances). The tappets are made up of an adjuster and a lock nut.

To set the gap we have to loosen the lock nut, set the adjuster using a feeler gauge, and then tighten the lock nut WITHOUT moving the adjuster. The gap should be set to 0.05mm for both inlet and exhaust valves.

They are called Tappets... because they tap slightly so dont panic... valves being loose is better than them being tight

Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:58 pm   OK, I'm an idiot!

I'm now over 1000km so I thought it was time to adjust my valves.

Got it done quite easily and was quite chuffed with myself, gave it a ride around the block and it was very noisy.......I knew imediately what I had done.............................the gap should be 0.05 but in my haist I used the 0.50...................thought it seemed a bit strange that they should be that loose.

I set my intake to .03 and exhaust to .06, and she runs great. big difference from the 0.02 that both seemed to be set at from the factory

Just finally got round to setting my valve clearances; only been a year.

Anyway, they seemed to have closed up quite a bit in the months I've been riding. A bit of struggle but think I got 'em both set right to 0.05, the guide passes through the gap with a bit of gentle resistence.

When I started the engine to see how it sounded, the tappets were making right racket! I know that tappets are supposed to tap but it seemed 'not right'

Do they 'seat' themselves after abit of running, or is the loud noise a sign that something is wrong?

Cheers

on the bit you screw in and out, between there and where it touches.

If that makes sense?
