When I mentioned to my dealer that I would be changing my own oil, he told me to be careful because the screw was made out of "soft metal" and it could easily be stripped. True? If so, can I replace the screws on the scooter with regular ones?

Sounds like a mechanic that doesn't like do-it-yourself non-customers. Just don't tighten it more than wrist-tight with a screwdriver-socket and you won't strip it. E.g., don't use an impact wrench on any bolts, just on the ONE variator nut that everyone talks about.

The oil drain screw is kind of soft. There is no other stronger replacement, so be careful.

You got good advise from your dealer. The drain screw is rather soft as said. Use a well fitting wrench. The adjustable wrenches are likely to cause damage. Tight enough so it does not vibrate out is all it needs.

It's much softer than what you'll find under a Chevy V8 oil pan, but it isn't eggshell fragile.
Replacing the drain plug will take care of the issue of stripping out the head, but stripping the threads on the motor itself can be just as easily done and not nearly as easily fixed I might add.
Always use a 6-sided socket to remove the drain plug, and when tightening it back up, hold the wrench in one hand and with the other, bump your fist 2-3 times aginst your hand holding the wrench. That'll be plenty tight enough and you shouldn't over tighten it and strip out the motor threads. ;)
I worked at Snappy Lube for 6months, and thats how I learned how tight 'tight' was with oil pans.

I've always impact wrenched my drain bolt and not had any problems apart from getting oil on my wrench :)

Thanks for tips and advice. I'll probably just take it to the dealer for oil changes. He charges $10.00. I'm not mechanical at all. I probably had no business buying a scooter that requires high maintenance. In fact, I bought a 10 speed bike as back up in case the scooter goes down and I can't get it to the shop for a few days.

I think you need to learn how to do it yourself, and do it often. It's frickin easy!

The drain bolt is a 17mm and it's located on the left side of the engine.

Get a bread pan and put it under the drain and remove the bolt. Walk away.

Come back in 5 minutes, put the bolt back in and tighten it. Then pour 1 liter of 10w40 oil in the engine via the dipstick hole. Voila! You did it!

The gear oil is just as easy... Use 90wt gear oil. See pics:

It is better to have a soft drain plug, reason being if you over tighten it hopefully you will only damage the plug threads not the hole threads as the plug can be easily replaced.
