Sat Jul 05, 2008 4:37 pm   Voltage Regulator?

I am having a problem with my 2003 CPI Tracker scooter in that the battery is not being charged while riding and I end up draining my battery which isn't good. I'm thinking the voltage regulator may be at fault but I have no idea what this part looks like. I do not have an owners or service manual so I am stuck guessing.

I've taken the seat and helmet bucket off to open up the area under the seat. There isn't much to see except for a 12V DC 20A relay and another sealed unit with several wires coming out that I assume is the voltage regulator. Here's a picture of the sealed unit;

...and here is one of the various wires coming out of it;

This is a picture of the 20A relay;

Is the first picture the voltage regulator? Anyone know where I can locate a replacement so I may test my theory?

That looks more like a CDI unit to me.

The regulators are usually up front under the plastic.

It should look something like this:

How about this gizmo?

I had to go into the instrument pod to find anything else electrical.

That looks like the starter relay.

Could a faulty regulator really stop a battery from charging?

Mine was on the frame under the seat but I've seen them behind the front panel.

Looked in both of those areas and found nothing.

Look for the cooling fins... a regulator sticks out with them...

The only place I haven't looked is under the frame where the under tray panels are located. Failing that it's off to a dealer to get gouged.

Call them and ask 1st. Or better yet, have them get you a voltage regulator for it. Then you'll know exactly what the hell yours will look like. You might have fumbled around it several times over in your previous searches. ;)
Don't just give up and turn the whole bike over to them! You're just asking for them to find 100 things "wrong" with it and end up spending $100s more than is needed. :o
OR: You might never see it running again because the part is "back ordered".... (translation: We don't wanna drill & rethread the bolts we will strip out, working on it! So were not gonna f*ck with it!)

You're right! Some dealers will bend you over with no lube. :icon_icon_shag:

CPI isn't a brand that is supported locally and I have no source for parts. I'd prefer to do the work myself, but I need to locate the original regulator so that I can then try to locate a replacement online. I'm still looking for a service manual to.

I've contacted CPI USA but the email addresses they provide online are invalid and they don't respond. Not very helpful at all.

I found my regulator exactly where Fox's diagram (the dawg's 50cc manual) shows it would be. It's bolted to the brassy strut in front of the forepost, next to the round black horn. That's the ignition key switch on the other side of it.
