|
|
| I recently reset my valve clearances due to hesitation on my 50cc. Try as I may I apparently could not get them set at .002" because my engine now makes a "clattering" sound indicating that the gap is over .002". The hesitation is gone and my scooter is running great. Just wondering if this will cause any long term problems if I don't get them back to specification? |

The sound may either come from tappets, or valves hitting against the piston.
I confused these two and ended up changing crankshaft and piston. |

| Fox, if you set yours to .005" don't they make noise? The spec calls for .05mm which converts to .002" |

Yeah, the book says .05 mm, but I suspect that's a typo, or just wrong.
.05mm is 5 hundredth's of a mm and that's way too small in my opinion. I think it should read something like .5 mm.
That's just my opinion, but I'll stand by it because my valves have been set to .005 in. for a couple years now and the valves are quiet. I mean you can hear them if you get down there and try, but they aren't making a "Clatter" as you describe it. I get 50+ downhill. 40-45 on flats. |

I set mine at .07mm and they are quiet. If they are too loud I would redo them to less clearance because I cannot stand that sound (sounds like somethings wrong).
I think one mans .07mm will differ slightly from another persons .07mm if that makes any sense? Depends on how tight you get it on your feeler gauge and no two people will do it exactly alike. But I would say if its loud its a little too loose. Too loose is better than too tight. Too tight can burn the valves. I ended up doing mine like 3 or 4 times before I was happy with them! |

| I'm gonna take a stab at it...are you running regular grade fuel? My scoot said to run mid-grade or higher. |

1.0mm = .040"inch
0.1mm = .004"inch
0.01mm = .0004"inch
so:
0.05mm = .002"inch
Actually anything between .002" and .005" will do with no harm to the engine. Anything less than .002" could cause problems. |
