| Thu Jun 19, 2008 4:58 am Mystery Piece Found In My Carb |
|
|
I was taking apart my carb to clean it in an attempt to solve my on going problem (http://chinesescoots.forumwise.com/chinesescoots-thread7473.html&highlight=muffler). I took off the float bowl and then unscrewed the main/idle jet. I then flipped it over and took off the top and the spring and needled that lay beneath. At some point while I had it flipped over like this, I heard something fall out. I turned out to be a mystery piece that I hadn't seen before. I have another carb just like this but my other doesn't have this piece.
I also can't figure out where it's supposed to go. The main jet is the only place it fits or that I can think it would go ( I figured it had something to do with the main jet seeing as I was messing with the needle when it came out). It also fits on top of the main jet almost perfectly. But when I put it in and try to screw the main jet back into place it doesn't go all the way it. (I only hand tightened it so far. I don't want to get it stuck in there.)
It's a Walbro carb so I googled it and found this: http://www.briggsracing.com/display/router.asp?Docid=101413
In the diagram there is a small piece above the main jet labeled 555537. So I googled "walbro 55537" and found a post in a forum that said:
Next, I took the Walbro carb apart and used the parts found in the 555537 methanol conversion kit.
http://karting.4cycle.com/faq.php?faq=summerlin
I'm guessing this means that my carburetor has the potential of running on methanol (it even talks about this on the first page I found while googling) but would that work on my current engine and what effect has this been having on my use of gas with the scooter? Can I remove the piece altogether? If not how do I get it to fit? I'm not really sure what to do. |

This diagram shows no such piece. Maybe it goes where you think it does, but it's supposed to remain pressed into the main carb casting. :?: :?

| I'm afraid to force it in with a screw driver. I don't want to get it stuck. But somehow it fit before. Do you think I can go without it? |

I think it's there for a reason. Not sure what that reason is though. Tomorrow I will take my carb cap and diaphragm out since I to have a Walbro and I will shine a flashlight down in there and see what I can see and post back. |

Does it go behind the needle? I have seen pieces that look like this that kind of keep the needle in place. Once you slip the needle in place, that piece should slip in right behind it, there may be tracks for the arm things as well.

| No dice. I just tried it. Not only do they not match up in any way but there's also no way to get the needle, the white plastic piece and the mystery piece to stay together once it starts it's way down the hole. |

I think it's a guide for the needle, and it's supposed to stay in the carb body.
But hey I could be wrong. I've been wrong way too many times to count. |

| I tried putting it in before the needle and it took up so much room that the shaft couldn't pull up. |

I think it goes in before the spray nozzle like in the 4th pic you showed, but I think it's supposed to stay in the carb. and not fall out. |

| That does look familiar. I had that piece in 3rd 24mm replacement carb, but not my 2nd. My 1st, I just don't remember if it was there or not. If it did have it, it never fell out. I was having too many carb problems as it was without leaving pieces off and experimenting at the time. |

I'm quite sure it go's in like the 4th picture, The one with the main jet still showing some if the threads. I just had a carburetor apart a few weeks ago and had the same issue. it's not a big deal that it came out, it's probably just poor tooling or machining process. Fox gets the credit for this one, I just agree.
