Thu May 01, 2008 5:18 pm   CHANGING HANDLE GRIPS SAFELY

Tools Needed:

A Long skinny Flat Head Screwdriver
A Cup full of Hot water and Dish Soap
Peer Pressure to Remove them
New Grips! (Bmx grips work fine on a 50cc)

1.)First Stick your Skinny screwdriver behind the flap on the grip and using some leverage pry it back towards you just enough to lift up the rubber from the metal handlebar tubing.(See Pic)

2.) Gently pour some of your Hot water/Soap mix onto the grip, letting some water run down into the handlegrip, This makes it easier to pry off.

3.) Gently pry and twist the grip toward you but be sure not to scratch the metal on your switch mount and its off!

4.).The procedure for the Throttle side is basically the same but use a little more care due to the plastic sleeve under the grip.

5.) Using care Gently pry up the grip to get some soapy water under it,then continue to remove carefully, You should be left with this..

6.)Decide What Grips you want to install, I picked these Ame' Bmx Grips They do make An Ame Atv Grip but I found out I had the Bmx Grip Sizing, which still fit, a 50cc..You may actually need the Atv size for yours(which one side is a little larger for the throttle side)

7.)Put hot soapy mix into New grip, and slide onto the Throttle side. They will drain dont worry(You can also use Hairspray but it makes this step too hard for someone lazy like me)Since I used Bmx Grips I had to struggle a bit to get this side on, BUt its on!

8.) Slide the other side on,This one shoudl go on easily and There you are...Your New Grips are installed ..Are you ready to feel the softness?

They look pinkish but thats because these ones are red but Ive had them since 1986 lol..they make all different colors for just about anything.
Hope this Helped!

Cool, but they look rubbish :P I once cut my hands doing this procedure when I was younger. Still have the scars.

It's easier to just cut the old ones off with a utility knife. If you are careful, It takes about 30 seconds per grip.

Well, maybe you shouldn't handle sharp objects then. rofl

I installed vinyl flooring and carpet for about 7 years so a utility knife is like an extension of my hand. What makes a knife unsafe is the person holding it.

Here's a tip: When using a razor knife, keep your free hand out of the way. :hammer: LOL

hehe. umm I would change them. the pink is a bit girly, you need black or a dark colour to break up the colours on the front end. the other day I tried spraying my mirror red! it looked like a noddy car so I had to get some petrol and scrub it off lol.

another way to do this is soak a rag in gas and wrap the grip with it.
The gas will swell up the rubber and make it easy to remove.
You can soak the new ones too and they will be much easier to install.
Then leave the scoot out in the sunlight and the grips will srink back down as the gas evaporates.

Use the knife to remove the grips. I bought BMX grips and they made the throttle stick because it was very tight. So I boiled some water and put the grip in the water for 60secs, and it made the grip really soft . After it cools on the throttle it stays that size. :)

No more cruz control.

Just my 10 cents.
