| Tue Feb 05, 2008 11:54 pm How To Adjust The Valve Clearance |
|
|
You may or may not need to remove some body panels for this job. You might need a flashlight and something soft to lay on, as well as a set of sockets and wrenches, a Phillips screwdriver, a feeler gauge and a pair of pliers.
NOTE: THIS SHOULD BE DONE ON A COLD ENGINE!!!
1. Place the scooter on the center stand.
2. Remove the breather pipe from the valve cover.
3. Remove the valve cover from the engine. There is no need to drain the oil.
4. Remove the cooling fan shroud from the right side of the engine to expose the flywheel. There is a 1 inch diameter access plug in the fan shroud for timing mark viewing, however it's better to remove the entire cover to familiarize yourself with the marks if it is the first time you are performing this task.
5. Turn the engine to line up the T mark with the mark on the engine case as shown. This places the piston at the top of it's stroke and assures the valves are closed.
The cam sprocket holes should be aligned as shown here:
6. Loosen the lock nut on the adjuster and using a gauge placed in the gap, turn the adjuster screw until the gauge is snug but not tight in the gap as shown in the following pics. The manual says .05mm for both valves, but I set mine to 5 thousandths of an inch (.127mm) It helps to bend the tip of the gauge to get into tight places.
7. Now the tricky part. Tighten the locknut without allowing the adjuster screw to move. This usually requires holding it with a pair of needle nosed pliers or other tool while tightening the lock nut with a wrench, and may require a couple or more attempts to get it just right. Leaving the gauge in the gap while tightening the locknut is helpful. Again, you want the gauge to be snug but not tight in the gap.
8. Repeat the process on the other valve.
9. Replace the valve cover and tighten the bolts in a criss cross pattern.
There is no need for a new gasket.
10. Re-attach the breather pipe to the valve cover.
11. Replace the fan shroud.
12. You are done!

| I tightened the locknut with the feeler gauge in the gap to keep the gap right, it seems to work but I set mine to 0.05mm but ive heard of having a gap of 0.124mm, I'm going to try this soon |

| A lot of these how-tos don't say what the benefits are of doing them. I'm not questioning them I just want to know what differences I should be looking out for. |

| all it will do is make your engine run properly. the recommended clearances on these engines as quoted from the maintenance manual are 0.06 intake (top valve) and 0.08 exhaust. done these to mine and they work fine. |

| How often should this be checked/adjusted? |

What manual are you talking about thruss? I did mine at .06 and .08 and they were tapping so loud I couldn't stand it. I put them both back to the .05 setting the factory had set them at and it is quiet and running tip-top.
Maybe you are quoting an 80cc kit manual? :?: |

No the benefit is a properly running engine. Sometimes the valve gap will change ever so slightly and cause the engine to run crappy. This is rare. I have had my scooter for 2 years and adjusted my valves once in all that time. It's something you need to check when trying to diagnose a rough running engine, but not something that needs to be checked once a week.
Adjusting the valves gap too large will cause them to tap loudly. It's annoying! |

I have just checked the valves on this giantco I am trying to do up.
a local snotty nosed 16year old had it and near enough wrecked it
I couldnt get it to run properly, wouldnt start of the electric start and you really had to kick it to get it to start and then it ran like a bag of spanners.
took the plug out and checked compression which hardly farted past my finger in the hole, and hardly noticable with moving the kickstarter with my hand.
checked the valves, the exhaust tappet had no clearance at all, I backed it off untill there was clearance and guess what, a hell of alot of compression, put it back together and it now starts first kick with hardly any effort, I cant try the electric start as I flattened the battery trying to get it started.
the scoot has only done 1100km so I cant understand why the valve tappet should be soo far out.
anyway now its running right I'm gonna sort the paintwork out.
metalic red and black when its finished. also gonna paint the wheels as the alloy is abit of a mess. |

AHA! Exactly what I was looking for. My next weekend project. You guys are tops. Almost all the info I need is all here in one forum! :D
Man, this is going to bring back memories when we used to drag race our Toyotas and VWs. Adjusting valves became old hat and this time I only have to adjust 2! |
