Thu Nov 15, 2007 7:21 pm   rear wheel

came home from work tonight and wheeling my scoot into the garage for the night and I heard an unusual noise from the back end. a bit clunky but not to heavy.

bike on the centre stand I had a prod about and found the rear wheel has a bit of play on it. also the bolt that holds the wheel on (exhaust side) rotates in time with the wheel when turned.

is this unusual?

I downloaded a scooter manual and it looks a doddle to remove the rear wheel (exhaust off or moved, bolt undone and removed wheel off).
is it really that straight forward and should there be any play in the rear wheel (side to side and up and down)?

I dont think there is a bearing in the wheel centre but what could be causing the excessive play?

Just have a go at tightening that nut, don't ride it untill its sorted.
The last thing you want is the back wheel falling off when your out is it!!

should the nut/bolt be turning as well as the wheel though?

I wouldn't have thought so, thats what you have bearings for.

The nut will turn with the wheel if its a single sided fitting, just like on a car.

All you have to do is remove the nut and pull the wheel off. There are bearings in the gearbox casing that the axle shaft rides on. With the wheel off, wiggle the shaft to check for play. You shouldn't have any up/down side/side play in the bearings. If it's sloppy then don't ride it.

The nut spins with the wheel. This is normal.

Here's a pic of my 2 stroke with the wheel off:

I tightend the nut up with the tools I had (mole grips) but really need a socket set. this worked but the nut has come loose again as it was probably not tight enough.
how do I stop it working loose once tightened properly?

Get some Loctite thread adhesive from the auto parts. Get the Medium strength/High-temp. formula. Remove the nut, apply it to the threads , install and tighten the nut with a socket.

#246 Threadlocker High Temp./Medium Strength

This threadlocker resists oil and mild surface contamination at continuous temperatures to 450°F. Suitable for fasteners between 1/4" and 3/4" (6 to 20 mm) diameters.

What Fox said, ^^^^^ but you really shouldn't use Moleys for doing up nuts. You'll spoil the nut, and it won't be tight enough. Then the wheel will loosen, and one day you will get a speed wobble which will be the end of you. :(

Just have someone sit on it and apply the brakes, then use a regular socket wrench to break it loose. You can use a short length of pipe on the end of the socket handle to give you a longer lever.

cheers for that info. I havent got a large enough socket but I'll find a way to use the impact sockets.
