Hey Yall
I'm moving from Las Vegas to Ann Arbor and I'm wondering if any of you know the scooter laws in MI.
All ya need to ride in Vegas is a tank of gas and some brass balls! hehe
Thanks Ken |

Hi Doom!
I am from Michigan, just north of Lansing.
Laws are as follows:
Scooters are split into 2 classes
Moped
50cc & under
can not go faster than 30 mph
Helmets are required for riders under 18-not for adults
requires a registration sticker-good for 3 years $15
Insurance NOT required
Anything that exceeds Moped capability is considered a Motorcycle
requires a license plate & insurance
Requires a motorcycle endorsement on your license-have to pass a written & road test
Helmets must be worn
Here is a a link to the State web site with some extra info
http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627_8666_9064-25388--,00.html
NOTE
There is a little leeway in the moped classification. I registered my 50cc Taishan scooter as a moped. Its top speed is 45mph. No cop has every looked twice at me. I have zipped through radar traps at 40 & they never blink an eye. Adult riders are pretty much ignored by the Police (Around here anyway) Unless you are doing something really stupid like riding 45 in a 25mph zone.
If you have any questions, let me know.
