Here's how it's done on my old Taishan Commuter and it should be pretty much the same on all Chinese scooters:

Near the back wheel look for a nut with a washer which will look a bit different to all the rest:

(As you can see the top is completely flat whereas all the others aren't)

Undo the nut and pour some oil in, because the hole is so small it will be tricky. I just held the nozzle tight to the hole and squeezed the bottle, it seemed to go in. 8-)

Look under the nut and you'll see a draining bolt:

You undo this when you want to drain your transmission oil.

There is a special transmission oil that you can buy but if you want you can just use your normal 10w/40 oil that you use for the engine.

I got told you need use 80/90w for the transmission

HI WENT TO THE LINK WITH YOUR JINLUN JL50QT-4 WHERE DID YOU GET THE PARTS FROM MATE I HAVE SAME BIKE WAS IMPRESSED AT THE SPEED,MY BUSHES HAVE GONE IN SWINGING ARM AND ENGINE MOUNT BUSHES NEED DOING,WAS GOING FINE BUT BEFORE XMAS VERY WEIRD HANDLING IN PROCESS OF GETTING ENGINE BUSHES OUT AT MO RIGHT PIG OF A JOB WEIRD AS ON 54 PLATE.THANKS :roll:

I use 90w gear oil in my trans. I lay my scooter on it's side on a blanket so the gear oil runs into the hole easier. I always put in a little more than it says to in the manual.

I lean mine against a wall to drain,and use a big syringe to fill, 100mls is recommended

Dont over fill these gearbox's, you will build up too much pressure and blow the seals.

I only put in a little extra, like 15ml.'s. Never had a problem.

Change Gear Oil.

First you need to locate the Lower drain bolt and the Upper fill bolt. These are easy to locate as noted in the picture.

Start by removing the lower bolt with an 11mm box end wrench. It is best to have the oil warm (not hot) before you drain

Use a container to catch the waist oil. It's a good idea to use gloves, gear oil is smelly unlike motor oil

Remove the upper bolt to allow the gear casing to drain completely.

I collected the waste gear oil so I could measure how much oil it took. If I could understand the re-fill quantity in the manual I would not have needed to measure the drain oil, but I had no idea how much the gear case held

After I figured out how much old oil drained out, I filled a clean container with the same amount of synthetic 90 weight gear oil.

Securely replace the bottom bolt after all the old oil has drained out.

Here's where you need to get creative. I found a small plastic tube that I bent to fit into the upper drain bolt opening. A short piece of small hose would also work. I tried using just the turkey baster, but oil leaked all over the place.

After you rig up a small hose or plastic tube that was inserted into the fill hole as I did, draw the oil with a 99 cent turkey baster so you can squirt it into the gear case.

Squeeze the oil in slowly so it doesn't spill.

I believe the full mark is even with the bolt threads so I let a little oil run out of the gear case.

When you replace the lower & upper bolts be certain the washer is in place.

Even though it sounds like a HUGE difference, the reason many scooter manuals say you can use, for instance: 10W40 engine oil or 75w90 gear oil is because they use completely different testing procedures and temperatures to determine viscosity ratings for engine and gear oil. So a 10w40 engine oil is roughly equivalent in actual viscosity to 75w90 gear oil.

However, if it's available the gear oil is always better, because it's has additives specially for transmissions. I use a small funnel with a flexible plastic drinking straw siliconed to it for putting gear oil in, and know some folks that use an oil can that has a pump to squirt oil in. Whatever works!

gear oil is the best. however I use automatic transmission fluid. works really great, no metal bits in the last drain (did 300 miles on it), and it doesn't seam to have as much of a hesitation on the inital acceleration

Thanks! I was wondering if lighter oil might help initial acceleration. I've looked for lightweight gear oil 75w80 which is supposed to be close to 5w30 motor oil in weight, but can't find it locally. Guess I'll order some. I don't think I really want to be the one to find out how my tranny holds up with anything thinner than that.

Since I got my scooter to where I can cruise at 60mph(GPS verified, 65mph max), my CVT gets hot easier so I had to take the entire rubber air intake hose off of it and just put a screen over the large opening at the front of the CVT. That helped. I'm sure the tranny gets hotter because of running more power/rpms too, so I don't want to risk it.
